Building Blocks Camp 2021
Summer 2021 enrollment opens for new SCC families on March 22.
Building Blocks is a small group program designed for 2- to 5-year old children with difficulties in language, sensory/emotional regulation, and/or social communication development.
Our camps will be theme-based by week, and will focus on improving language, social communication, and play skills within structured and unstructured play activities. Our daily schedule includes typical preschool activities such as circle time, center time, snack, art/sensory play, table time (structured activities), and gross motor play on our indoor playground.
Skills developed during activities include developmentally appropriate speech and language targets, participation in group activities, and the building blocks to emerging joint play skills and social conversation. Intervention techniques utilized are consistent with naturalistic behavioral theory, developmental theory, and the SCERTS model (Prizant, Wetherby, Rubin, & Laurent), as appropriate to the individual children in the group.
Each class is led by a certified speech-language pathologist; and supported by graduate students in speech-language pathology from the UTD-Callier Center for Communication Disorders. Class size will be limited to 5 children.
“Right fit” children for this group may have one or more of the following characteristics:
- Challenges in social communication skills, including conversation
- Challenges in play skills
- Challenges in classroom skills
- Delayed speech/language development
- Sensory processing difficulties
Highly verbal 3- to 6-year old children who are looking to gain play and social skills should consider enrollment in our Bridge Builders program.
Building Blocks I and II:
In order to place each child with his/her best fit peers and curriculum, Building Blocks will be offered at two levels for the Summer 2021 semester.
Building Blocks I:
Building Blocks I is a small group program designed for 2 – to 3- year old children with difficulties in language, sensory/emotional regulation, and/or social communication development. Using the therapeutic techniques described above, daily activities will promote development of language, functional communication, and joint play skills with adults and peers.
Building Blocks II:
Building Blocks II is a small group program designed for verbal 3- to 5- year old children with difficulties in language, sensory/emotional regulation, and/or social communication development. In addition to the therapeutic techniques described above, our Building Blocks II program also puts increased therapeutic emphasis on building social conversation and joint play skills with peers. Building Blocks II camps will also incorporate beginning social cognitive concepts, including elements of Social ThinkingTM by Michelle Garcia Winner.
Camps will be held at our SCC Clinic, located at 4600 Greenville Avenue, Suite 160, Dallas, TX 75206
All Summer 2021 Building Blocks “camp” sessions will be held Monday through Thursday from 9:30 – 11:30 am.
In order to provide maximum flexibility for your family, we will offer Building Blocks summer enrollment for 3 mini-mester sessions. Enrollment in any and all sessions is welcome, pending availability.
Building Blocks is a tuition-based, private pay program. While we do not submit to insurance companies, your tuition may be reimbursable by your insurance company under your out-of-network benefits for group speech-language therapy (CPT code: 92508). We encourage you to contact your insurance company with any questions.
How do I enroll?
Please note: If you are a new client to SCC, we require a recent speech-language evaluation (within past 6 months) and a 30-minute intake consultation ($75) prior to enrollment to assure placement in the correct group, and to set appropriate targets for your individual child for his/her time in class.
