Building Blocks I is a small group program designed for 3- to 5-year old children with difficulties in language, sensory/emotional regulation, and/or social communication development. Our camps will be theme-based by week, and will focus on improving language, social communication, and play skills within structured and unstructured play activities. Our daily schedule includes typical preschool activities such as circle time, center time, snack, art/sensory play, table time (structured activities), and gross motor play. Skills developed during activities include developmentally appropriate speech and language targets, participation in group activities, and the building blocks to emerging social conversation. Intervention techniques utilized are consistent with naturalistic behavioral theory, developmental theory, the SCERTS model (Prizant, Wetherby, Rubin, & Laurent), the Early CLASS (Facilitating Early Social Communication; Rollins) developmental theory and techniques, and elements of Social Thinking (Michelle Garcia Winner) as appropriate to the individual children in the group.
Building Blocks 2 is a small group program designed for 3- to 5-year old children with challenges in social communication skills and play skills with peers, and may have mild-to-moderate language delays. Like our morning Building Blocks camps, Building Blocks 2 camps will be theme-based by week for facilitation of key language concepts. However, our afternoon groups will include increased emphasis to development of social conversation and play skills with peers. Building Blocks 2 camps will also target beginning social cognitive concepts, including elements of Social ThinkingTM by Michelle Garcia Winner.
Each camp class will be led by a speech-language pathologist; and supported by graduate students in speech-language pathology from the UTD-Callier Center for Communication Disorders. Class size will be limited to 6 children.
“Right fit” children for this group may have one or more of the following characteristics:
